About
We’re new owners of this farm, but its trademark bank barn has long been a landmark in Seven Valleys, PA.
Our goal is to be good caretakers for this next season of its life – restoring its pastures, outbuildings, and doing our part to ensure it enjoys another 131 years.
What we Believe
We put environmental stewardship and animal welfare at the heart of every decision we make.
We believe in rotational grazing, no-till farming, and recognize that in York County everything we do eventually ends up in the Chesapeake Bay. Even the little unbuffered riparian area bisecting our pasture bottoms into the Codorus Creek. We have a responsibility to protect it from siltation and other contaminants.
Over the next several years we will work to rest and restore overgrazed pastures, erect new fencing around our riparian areas, and – yes – repaint and restore the trademark big, beautiful bank barn.
Why "Good Fortune Farm"?
Good Fortune Farm is our home, a passion project, an outlet for our love of animals and commitment to environmental stewardship.
We open the door to our barns to extend our good fortune with our equine guests, their owners, and, through restoration and property improvements, the wider community.
Historic Preservation
It is our responsibility to be good caretakers of a little piece of history. The bank barn dates from 1891, the corn crib may be a few decades more recent, and though it has been built upon in layers over time, the oldest part of the home itself dates to the 1700s.
A famous advertising campaign for a very expensive watch brand quips,
“You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.”
Similarly, we believe we are the next in a long line of caretakers. We intend to improve the property while taking great care to preserve its history.
Our Animals
In addition to our equine guests, the farm is home to three barn cats, six (as yet uncaught) kittens from this spring’s litters, three guinea hens (who put the “free” in free range), and an array of wildlife.
